Why Confident Kids Suddenly Start Avoiding Tackles — And Why It's Usually Not Nerves
Coaches call it a confidence dip. Parents call it a phase. More often than either, it's the two pieces of plastic strapped to his legs.

Read this if
Your child is between 6 and 14, plays at least twice a week, and has started hanging back in challenges he used to go into. He can't explain why. Neither can you.
It Starts Small
He arrives at the 50/50 half a step late. He turns his body away at the moment of contact. He gets up slower than he used to.
Nobody sees a problem, because from the sideline it looks like a kid having a quiet game. Then it happens the next week. And the one after.
A child who doesn't trust his protection stops committing to challenges. He isn't making a decision — his body is making it for him.
And there are usually signs in the kit bag before there are signs on the pitch:
- He pulls his socks up every few minutes during a game
- There's a roll of tape in his bag, and he asks you for more
- His pads have rotated round to the side of his leg by full time
- Red, itchy lines across his shins after he takes them off
- He's started leaving one out, or cutting them down
- Some mornings he asks if he can skip training

The Part Nobody Explains To Parents
A shin pad only protects the exact patch of bone it's sitting on.
Traditional pads are flat plates. A shin is a curved bone. So the pad touches the front of the leg and leaves the sides of it uncovered — and every sprint, every turn, every slide nudges the plate a little further around the leg.
By the second half, the pad is near his shin rather than on it. The strap is still tight. The protection has already moved.
Children work this out faster than adults do, and they never put it into words. They take one knock on an unprotected edge, and from then on their body treats every challenge as a risk. That's the hesitation you're watching from the sideline.

What FLAIR Changed
FLAIR built the protection into a sleeve instead of strapping it on top of one. The pad is shaped to wrap the shin rather than sit flat against it — the brand calls this circular tibia technology — and it sits inside a stretch Lycra sleeve with a silicone strip that holds the whole thing against the leg.
He pulls it on like a sock. There is nothing to strap, nothing to tape, and nothing to reach down and straighten at minute 40.

⚠ Before you buy any built-in sleeve
"Built-in" has become a category, and a lot of what's sold under that name is a foam rectangle sewn into a compression sock. Four things worth checking on any pair:
- Does the pad wrap the bone, or is it a flat plate in a pocket?
- Is there an anti-slip strip, or does the sleeve rely on tightness alone?
- Do the pads come out, so the sleeve can go in the machine?
- Is it sized by age band, or is it an adult sleeve in a smaller size?

Questions Parents Ask
Which size do I order?
Sleeves come in three age bands — Kids (6–10), Youth (11–15) and Adult (16+) — and stretch within each band. Padding comes in four sizes: 10×6, 12×7, 14×7 and 19,5×7,5 cm. Younger or smaller players take the smaller pad within their sleeve band.
Does he still need normal shin pads on top?
No. The protection is inside the sleeve. He wears his game socks or sock sleeves over the top as usual.
How do I wash them?
Lift the pads out, wipe them with a damp cloth and mild soap, and put the sleeves through a gentle cycle. Air dry.
Will they slide down like his old ones?
The sleeve is stretch Lycra with a silicone strip against the skin, so the pad can't rotate around the leg the way a strap-on plate does. If they do slide, the 30-day guarantee covers it.
What does it cost and what's included?
€29,95, down from €54,95. A pair of FLAIR Pro Grip Socks (€16,95 value) is included free with every order.
The Fix Takes Thirty Seconds
Not every hesitant kid has a gear problem. Some of them are tired, or playing up an age group, or having a hard month at school.
But if his pads are taped on, rotated by half time and leaving marks on his legs, that's worth ruling out first — because it's the cheapest thing on the list to change, and he'll tell you within two sessions whether it made a difference.
